Description

The desk-based assessment has shown that the entire study area was intensively settled in the Roman period. Some of the Roman remains in the vicinity have had exceptional levels of organic preservation and are of national importance. Anglian remains are elusive, so the presence of burials and a post-built building of this date at the nearby Queen’s Hotel site at 1-9 Micklegate is significant and raises the possibility that remains of this date could be present at the site. It is clear that from the Anglo-Scandinavian period, right through the present day the entire study area has formed part of the densely settled historic core of York. The site therefore offers the potential for the recovery of archaeological deposits dating from the Roman period to the present day, with well-preserved organic remains being a strong possibility. This site would offer potential to enhance what is known of the development of the waterfront area of York.
