The upper extents of post-medieval make-up deposits of dark greyish brown silty clay with fragments of brick rubble were the earliest deposits observed during the watching brief, although very little of this horizon was exposed. A cast iron pipe was observed at the foot of Monk Bar, approximately 1m from the south-west face on the east side of the main arch. The foundations of 1 Goodramgate, which is presently occupied by Monk Bar Barbers, were exposed during the works. The footings comprised three courses of 19th century brick overlying a single course of magnesian limestone ashlar masonry. The masonry may represent re-use of medieval stonework. A 0.23m thick layer of steel-reinforced concrete was observed under both the asphalt roadway and the York stone pavement on the west side of Goodramgate inside Monk Bar.
