Description

YORK, TADCASTER ROAD (SE 589 502) The Yorkshire archaeological journal 58/1986/201 Mr. E. King reports that by courtesy of the new owners of the Voltigeur Hotel, 230 Tadcaster Road, the York Excavation Group has been able to continue its examination of the Roman road from Tadcaster to York. The site lies between that dug by the Group at No. 304 and that on the N edge of the Hob Moor allotments explored by Mr. L. P. Wenham in the 1950s. A narrow trench along the S. side of the drive revealed only 4 m surviving of the width of the road. This was at the extreme W. edge of the metalling and plunged into a ditch. A clay foundation between the road material and the sandy subsoil recalled the W. edge of the road in No. 304, and the position of the W. ditch can be safely located at 56.9 m from the present garden wall on Tadcaster Road.
