Description

Watching brief on 17 machine excavated trial trenches on a site adjacent to the National Railway Museum on Leeman Road to a mximum depth of 4.90m. Natural deposits were encountered at a variety of depths across the site between 0.50m-4.00m. A considerable amount of earth moving appears to have taken place on the site since the 19th century and this has obscured the original land surface to such an extent that it is not recognisable. Much of the material which has been dumped on the site appears to have a railway origin. It seems unlikely that significant archaeological deposits survive anywhere on the site.
