Description

Monitoring of trenches excavated for utility upgrading recorded no significant archaeological activity. No datable finds were recovered from these works and it was felt that the vast majority of observed contexts were of modern origin although it is possible that Contexts 1000, 1006, 1014, 1022, 1025 and 1028 may represent buried topsoils of uncertain but probably pre-modern date. No archaeological deposits of any great significance were noted even in the trench at the junction of Petersway and Clifton. There was also no evidence at all for any human burials which are known from this area alongside Clifton but it is worth noting that none of the trenches penetrated down to the natural subsoil and thus should there be burials in the vicinity then they are likely to be further down and possibly undisturbed.
