Description

This comprised monitoring of four small trial investigations within a kitchen and toilet. The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the potential for archaeological deposits to be present beneath the existing floor. The investigation was undertaken to provide archaeological information to assist in a proposal to lower the kitchen and toilet floor, to the same level as the adjacent north aisle floor. The archaeological monitoring has revealed the presence of potentially significant archaeological deposits at a depth of 0.20m below the existing floor. These deposits included possible graveyard soil and a probable mortar floor. The existing floor comprises concrete which was consistently 0.14m-0.15m thick and had been laid upon a plastic membrane. A design solution should be sought to enable the floor to be lowered through the removal of the existing concrete, whilst retaining the archaeological deposits below.
