Description
A combined archaeological evaluation and watching brief was carried out during the
construction of the new Indigo Hotel on Walmgate, York. This work, carried out between
December 2013 and May 2014 involved the excavation of the three trenches along with the
selected monitoring of drainage runs, underpinning pits and pile cap excavations.
These revealed that whilst there had been some truncation by later intrusions, including
cellarage, towards the Walmgate frontage, this was sufficiently spread out to allow the
survival of archaeological deposits relatively close to existing ground level. Towards the rear
of the site, truncation was more severe and a number of early modern and modern
construction events were recorded that had sliced the top of the archaeological levels away.
The remains of pits were encountered along with a fenced property boundary of possible 11th
century origin with leather off cuts suggesting likely craft production on site. An undated EW
aligned ditch located towards the rear of the site is likely to be of a similar date.
