Description

On the 21st of February 2017 a watching brief was undertaken on the ground floor of 9 Kings Street to observe geotechnical drilling operations. A single borehole was drilled using a percussion drilling rig by Bainbridge Bros Ltd. This work was monitored by an archaeologist as the site lies with the City of York Area of Archaeological Importance. The results of the watching brief indicate that build up material exists below modern overburden at a depth of 0.50m to 3.20m BGL. Below this level there was a layer of clay (1003) which could represent an attempt to reclaim land by using redeposited natural material. The next deposits encountered are probably alluvial in nature relating to river activity. Natural clay was not observed during the watching brief. No dateable archaeological material was recovered during the watching brief making interpretations of the data limited.
