Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Limited, in June-July 2016, during groundworks associated with the construction of a single new dwelling within a walled garden at 11 St. Peter's Grove, York. The watching brief was commissioned by Mr Michael Hammill of YORBUILD LTD to satisfy a condition attached to the development. The investigation comprised the monitoring of the mechanical excavation for a new slab foundation. This covered the full footprint of the new dwelling and was a maximum of 0.70m deep. Elements of late 19th century buildings were recorded together with a medieval to early modern soil sequence which preceded these. Natural deposits were not reached and no earlier archaeological features were recorded.
