Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Limited in March 2016 during property redevelopment. This investigation was carried out to satisfy conditions of an application for planning permission (15/20852/FUL) from the City of York Council. Archaeological works entailed monitoring and recording the removal of topsoil to the depth no deeper than 0.47 metre below ground level, to allow foundations for a new double garage unit at the rear of the dwelling, which is replacing a 20th century garage unit. Historic landuse and the shallow excavation resulted in uncovering late-19th century disturbed ground related to the sequence of outbuildings that once stood to the rear of the extent dwelling, with the partial footprint to one of those buildings. Two further hand-excavated trenches to the west of the dwelling revealed an active service pipe as well as possibly undisturbed natural horizons. No further archaeological deposits were revealed.
