Description
Archaeological evaluation on land to the rear of 52-62 Tadcaster Road comprising of 8 trenches. Three trenches on the eastern side of the site yielded archaeological material of Roman date.
Prehistoric
No evidence of prehistoric activity was found within the areas excavated. To test fully for the presence or otherwise of prehistoric features a larger proportion of the site would have to be examined.
Roman (1st-5th century AD)
A number of ditches, a pit and a possible construction trench were found within the areas excavated. These feattires SLIggest a sequence of activity of Roman date and use of the land for possible agricultural, or habitation, purposes. Within the area excavated it is not possible fully to interpret the nature of land use.
Anglian, Anglo-Scandinavian and medieval (5th-16th century)
No deposits of this date were encountered within the areas of excavation. The modern property divisions appear to reflect the medieval divisions.
Post-medieval and modern (16th-20th century)
The foundations of recently demolished buildings were visible, indicating the positions of structures associated with the most recent land use of the site, as a builder's yard and fabrication industry, and as stables aiid paddock.
