Description

Between late February and early April 2001 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief during the laying of a new gas main within a redundant gas pipe in Goodgramgate, York. The laying of the new pipe required the excavation of 17 relatively small trenches. One deeper additional trench was excavated during the same programme to investigate a leaking feeder sewer. The technique adopted to replace the old gas main ensured that the bulk of the materials excavated related to old trench fill and modern road materials. Only two of the trenches revealed archaeological deposits. Interpretation of the archaeological deposits within these trenches proved difficult though it does seem reasonably clear that none appear to relate to road metalling.
