Description

Between 18th March and 3rd April 1992 York Archaeological Trust carried out evaluative excavations at Rawcliffe Manor, Rawcliffe, York, on a site between Manor Lane, Rawcliffe and the A1237 outer ring road. The excavations followed recommendations made by North Yorkshire County Council's Assistant Archaeological Officer which were based on evidence obtained from geophysical and earthwork surveys previously completed by the York Archaeological Trust. The work primarily involved the investigation of a possible ditch system, which was though to be associated with an adjacent medieval moated site. As a result of this excavation, a further excavation was undertaken between 5th and 15th May, in a large trench incorporating the former Trench 2. This examined archaeological remains that were thought to predate the medieval ditch system.
