Description

Between 11th July and 9th August 2012 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief on works at the rear of 78 Bootham, York. The objective was to record any deposits, features or buried structures exposed during the excavation of foundation trenches for a new double garage located in the garden a short distance north-west of the principal rear vehicular access point to the property. The watching brief also observed earth moving and the stripping of a small area immediately towards the rear of the property for a small extension to the exterior. The site lies within the City of York Central Area of Archaeological Importance and within an area which contains a Roman cemetery. Recording was by means of written notes and measured sketches supplemented by a number of colour digital photographs. Two representative sections were recorded and are described below
