Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by On-Site Archaeology on land to
the rear of 18 Lawrence Street in York. The development area comprised the rear yard
area of the existing cycle shop and former chip shop situated just 76m to the east of
the city walls. The work monitored consisted of the machine excavation of three trial
trenches and the sinking of a single borehole to glean geotechnical information in
advance of the redevelopment of the site.
The site is located in an area of known archaeological activity ranging from a Roman
road through medieval activity to the scene of fierce fighting during the English Civil
War.
