Description

Between the 20 June and 9 September 2006, York Archaeological Trust undertook a combined training excavation and evaluation on land adjacent to St Saviours Church, Hungate, York (SE 6062 5188) (see Figure 1 Site location). During the course of the project a total of four trenches were excavated. These excavations follow on from an evaluation of the site conducted by YAT in 2004. The excavations had three mains aims - 1) To improve our knowledge of the history of this part of York over the past two millennia by obtaining further information about the character, extent. Date, function and preservation of the archaeology over the site. 2) To inform the management of the site and the curation of the historic buildings and monuments. 3) To provide training in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork for trainees and students on a complex urban site.
