Description

EXCAVATION Excavations in advance of proposed construction of car park. Earlier deposits were disturbed by the 19th century instrument factory whose foundations cut all levels. In the latter part of the Roman period two ranges of buildings occupied the south-western half of the site. No structures could be assigned to the Anglian or Anglo-Scandinavian period. One pit of many found on site was dated to the AS period. Entry and sources for NMR 635574 Excavations in the colonia revealed a group of badly robbed stone buildings east of Bishophill Senior. Painted plaster of high quality was recovered,and one of the buildings had an apsidal plan. The buildings had been erected in the late 2nd or early 3rd century on a massive terraced platformcovering earlier timber structures standing in ditched plots. No further information was attributed so unclear whether it relates to this site.
