Description
Strensall Tannery is located in Strensall, to the north of the town centre (NGR: 632
610) (Figure 1). The site is bounded to the north by New Road and to the west by
a road. To the south, the site is bounded by the River Foss, which passes under
the road via Strensall Bridge at the southeast corner of the site. The site was in
use as a Tannery until 2003, but since the closure of the plant has been subject to
vandalism and is currently in a derelict condition.
This building survey and assessment has been undertaken in mitigation of
demolition prior to redevelopment of the site. The survey aims to identify any
significant architectural features which reflect the original form and function of the
buildings and to trace the historical development of the site.
A
general photographic survey of the historic structures was undertaken using a
35mm camera to produce monochrome photography, supplemented with colour
images. Due to the condition of the building only external photography was
undertaken, with general views of the structures within their wider context.
1.6 Written notes were made on site to inform the descriptive and interpretative record
of the buildings. Documentary and cartographic research was undertaken at the
York City Reference Library.
