A desk top survey was carried out and was followed by an archaeological evaluation which consisted of a small scale excavation. This was undertaken to ascertain the nature and form of a known well dating to the Georgian period which was under threat from the proposed construction of York’s millennium bridge project. The desk top survey identified the pre-existence of a number of wells of the Georgian period in the area of New Walk, which included that of Pikeing Well. The excavation not only revealed this particular well but also found the floor of the well to be remarkedly well preserved. In the process of excavating this site another well was uncovered and was found to have been backfilled with its original stonework. Funded by York Millennium Bridge Trust.
