Description
trench
A watching brief was carried out on 17 machine excavated trial trenches. No deposits of archaeological significance were observed in any of the test pits.
Trench 2 was positioned on the Chapel Row frontage. The earliest deposits, at a depth of 10.13m, dated from the 11th century. The deposits followed a sequence of dumps and levelling deposits of domestic refuse and waste construction debris. Shallow pits were excavated on occassion for the disposal of similar waste materials. Dumping activity continued in the post-medieval period, then Victorian terraced houses were constructed.
