Description

YORK SE5951SW HOLGATE ROAD 1112-1/19/481 (North side) 24/06/83 Nos.70, 70A AND 72 and walls and railings attached to Nos.70A and 72 GV II Three houses. 1846-7, with C20 alterations. Brick with painted stone dressings. Slate roofs. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys (No.70 with attic). The windows are sashed with painted rusticated lintels which have keystones and segmental soffits. The 1st floor windows have a sill band. Nos 70A and 72 are of one main bay each, but No.72 has a second smaller window to the right on the 1st floor, above its doorway. The doorcases are coupled, with 2 engaged Ionic columns and a plain central panelled pilaster, and with panelled reveals. The doors are C20 and partly glazed, and the overlights are rectangular and plain. No.70, at the right, is of 2 bays and has 2 flat-roofed C20 attic dormers. The right-hand window on the ground floor is narrow and has a pilaster doorcase immediately to its right. Above the C20 panelled door there is a plain rectangular overlight. The gutters are carried on timber brackets. Ridge chimneys at left and between Nos 70 and 70A. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: in front of Nos 70A and 72 there is a brick wall with stone copings, supporting railings with cast finials, and 2 gates with iron gateposts which have ball finials. At the left it adjoins the railings to No.74 (qv) It is connected to the houses by plain railings between Nos 70A and 72 and between Nos 70 and 70A. (RCHME: City of York: London: 1972-: 126).
