SE 6055 NE NEW EARSWICK SYCAMORE AVENUE (south side) 9/59 No 26 (Hartside) GV II House. c1909-1914. By Parker and Unwin, for Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. Brick with French tile roof. 2 storeys with attics, 2 bays, and single- storey extension to right. Standard "New Earswick" window panes throughout. Pair of 3-light casements to main range. Half-glazed door and board door flanking single-light casement to hipped-roof extension. First floor: 3- light casements. Attic: 3-light casement dormers. Sprocketed eaves, end stacks. The particular significance of New Earswick lies in its contribution to the development of low cost housing in Britain. Experience gained and practices introduced here were incorporated extensively into the Tudor Walters Report of 1918 which was instrumental in the passing of the Addison Act of 1919. Plans from New Earswick influenced the Government Manual on low cost housing which followed the Act.
