Description

YORK SE6052SW MINSTER YARD 1112-1/27/713 (South West side) 14/06/54 No.10 Minster Song School (part) GV II House, now part of school. c1755; altered and re-roofed in early C19. For Dean John Fountayne. Orange-brown brick in Flemish bond on chamfered stone plinth with timber doorcase and cornice; slate roof, part hipped, with 10/10-pane sash window in flat dormer towards Minster Gates and brick stacks. EXTERIOR: 3-storey, 4-window front, right half projecting. Cellar openings in plinth. Left half has doorcase of slender engaged fluted columns, fluted frieze and angle rosettes, and door of 6 raised and fielded panels with squat 8-pane overlight. 12-pane sash window above door, and two similar on ground and first floors of right half. All second floor windows are squat 6-pane sashes. Other windows are inserted tall 8-pane sashes in left half. All original windows have flat arches of orange rubbed brick and no sills: ground floor windows have panelled shutters. 4-course raised brick bands to first and second floors and prominent moulded eaves cornice, all continued across right return. Rainwater goods on rosette clamps, with moulded and enriched hopper with Fountayne elephant crest, inscribed JF, dated 1763. INTERIOR: cellar retains brick arched fireplace. Quarter-turn staircase from ground to second floor has open string, turned heavy balusters and newels, and moulded and ramped-up handrail: attic staircase has close string, column balusters, turned newels and ramped up flat handrail. Ground floor room panelled above dado rail: enriched fireplace surround with moulded mantelshelf and eared overmantel panel. First floor front room has fireplace with reeded jambs and frieze, and rosette paterae. Rear room has painted fireplace with pulvinated moulded shelf. Second floor front room has fireplace with basket grate in plain surround with moulded shelf. Most rooms have moulded cornices. (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 165).
