Description

YORK SE6051NW QUEEN'S STAITH 1112-1/28/898 (West side) 20/06/89 Varvil's Warehouse GV II Warehouse. 1849. Designed by J B and Wm Atkinson for Mr Robert Varvill. Orange-red brick in English bond, with ashlar dressings and timber eaves band; truncated brick stack at right side of hipped roof of Welsh slate. EXTERIOR: basement, 2-and-a-half storeys and attic; 3-bay front. Rusticated ashlar basement with three segment-arched openings, all now blocked: centre arch wider than outer arches. On upper floors, centre bay treated as 2-and-a-half storey semicircular arch on pilasters, between full-height outer pilasters. On ground floor, part-glazed and panelled double doors in centre bay, between single-light windows. Mezzanine floor above has 4-light lunette flanked by round-headed windows. Second floor has segment-headed double doors in centre with round-headed window on each side. On attic floor, windows are tall sashes beneath continuous lintel, with raised sill band rising to form shallow pediment over centre bay arch. Stone sills to windows on ground and second floors; raised bands below mezzanine, second and attic floors. INTERIOR: not inspected. Listing NGR: SE6017851600
