Description

This conservation area, designated in 1975, includes the racecourse buildings and the former Terry's Chocolate Factory sited on the Knavesmire. The majority of the conservation area lies within the City of York Green Belt. The area underwent a Conservation Area Character Appraisal in 2006. The landscape is open and provides good long views in and out of the conservation area. The main elements of the character and appearance of the area are: 1) A cluster of buildings in an open landscape 2) The buildings of both Terry's Factory, especially the clock tower/chimney, and the racecourse grandstands rising out of their parkland setting in the green belt 3) The open views across the Knavesmire from Terry's factory and the racecourse towards Tadcaster Road with its mature trees
