Municipal Secondary School for Girls. 1908-10. Designed by Walter Brierley for the York Education Committee. Red brick with orange brick and ashlar dressings. Plain tile roofs with square louvred cupola on lead base with pyramidal lead roof and weather vane. 2 tall brick banded chimney stacks. Brick plinth and raised quoins. 2 storey. South-west facade 15 windows arranged 3:4:1:4:3, all with glazing bars and orange brick lintels on the ground floor. The central bay and end pavilions project very slightly with raised quoins, central bay and central bays of pavilions have wider windows topped with segmental pediments and have flanking pilasters, projecting balconies and tall upper windows that project into the pediments. North-east facade has recessed hall block in centre with single storey entrance block in front. Central moulded ashlar door surround flanked by single 3-light mullion toilet windows, and beyond 2 glazing bar sashes at either side with orange brick heads. Hall block behind has 5 round headed windows with raised keystones, moulded impost bands and banded rustication below. Between at eaves level raised brick aprons. Projecting wings at either side have blank ground floor with to right a large 7-light window and above a segment headed dormer window, to left 3 blank panels and above a segment headed dormer window. Side facades have 6 glazing bar windows on ground floor with orange brick lintels, above large S-light through eaves dormer window. Included as a fine example of the work of Walter Brierley, one of the pioneering designers of schools in this style. Later additions not of special interest.
