Description

YORK SE5952SE BOOTHAM TERRACE 1112-1/12/114 (North West side) Nos.16 AND 17 and attached railings GV II Two houses. 1865. Brick with red rubbed brick flat arches. Slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attics and basements. Each house 2 bays, with a canted bay window at the left on the ground floor, with sashes, a dentilled cornice, and a brick base which contains basement windows with glazing bar sashes and stone lintels. The 1st and 2nd floor windows are sashed with brick arches. No 16 has a gabled attic dormer. The doorcases have elaborate brackets, frieze blocks, dentilled cornices, panelled reveals, and pilasters with sunken panels. The doors have 6 moulded panels of equal size, and overlights with segmental tops. Both houses have modillioned gutter cornices, with the eaves of No.17 at a slightly lower level. Chimneys to left and right and between houses. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the attached railings have pointed finials and are set on low brick walls with stone copings. The gates are also of iron, with iron gateposts which have ball finials. Nos 1-22 Bootham Terrace form an unusually complete row of speculatively built terraced houses, constructed between 1860 and 1870 to an interesting variety of different designs.
