Description

YORK SE5952SE BOOTHAM TERRACE 1112-1/12/111 (North West side) No.12 and attached railings GV II House. 1865. Brick with slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with attic and basement. 3 bays. The windows to the 1st and 2nd floors are sashed with segmental brick arches. On the ground floor there is a timber canted bay window with a slate roof and a brick base. It has sashes, with moulded segmental heads which rise from pilasters. The brick base contains basement windows which are glazing bar sashes with segmental brick arches. To the right at both cellar and ground-floor levels there is a small sash window without glazing bars. The doorway, at the right, has a surround with a shallow segmental arch rising above pilasters and with a moulded cornice. The door has 2 panels of etched glass above 2 plain panels. The overlight has a segmental head. The gutter is carried on shaped brackets. The attic is lit by a small dormer. Chimneys to left and right shared with taller adjoining houses. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the attached railings have spear head finials and are set on low brick walls with stone copings. The gate is also of iron, with iron gateposts which have ball finials. Nos 1-22 Bootham Terrace form an unusually complete row of speculatively built terraced houses, constructed between 1860 and 1870 to an interesting variety of different designs.
