Description

YORK SE6051NW CASTLEGATE 1112-1/28/135 (North East side) 19/08/71 No.5 The Little John Public House and attached carriage gates GV II Inn and carriage arch with attached gates. Early C18, with mid C19 inn front, and later extension. Stucco front on painted stone plinth, with bracketed moulded eaves cornice of timber; rear of front range rendered; rear wing of orange-red brick in random bond; brick stacks to slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3-storey 4-bay front. At left of ground floor is flat carriage arch, closed by double gates of arrow-tipped railings, between chamfer-stopped jambs and with plain entablature terminating in paired grooved brackets. Present entrance through glazed double doors in 1-storey extension behind arch. To right of arch, inn front has three 12-pane sash windows with dwarf fluted pilaster jambs and painted moulded sills, beneath continuous frieze and cornice between grooved brackets. On first floor, 3-light bow window with 12-pane sashes to left: to right, tripartite window with 12-pane sash between 8-pane sashes. On second floor, windows are 12-pane sashes. Broad raised band to second floor. At right end of eaves cornice is inverted bell rainwater head. Rear: 3-storey gable wall, with 3-storey wing projecting to left. 24-pane first floor sash window over carriage arch in gable wall. Yard side of wing not visible. Rear elevation overlooking yard behind No.7 Castlegate (qv) has ground floor obscured by lean-to buildings, and at inner end single unequal 12-pane sash windows with flat arches on first and second floors.
