House, now shop. Probably C15 in origin, remodelled and extended c1700; refronted in late C18; sub-divided and altered in mid C19; shopfront and partial re-roofing C20. Timber-framed, encased in orange-brown brick in random bond, rear partly of orange-pink brick in English garden-wall bond; brick dentil cornice and brick stacks to pantile roof. EXTERIOR: 3-storey 3-window front. Shopfront incorporates glazed and panelled shop door at each end, and door of 6 raised and fielded panels with overlight at right of centre; 2 shop windows are bowed, and all have small-pane glazing. First and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes with renewed sills and flat brick arches, second floor windows squatter. Rear: 4-pane fixed light staircase window; 2 x 6-pane Yorkshire sash on first floor; squat 6-pane fixed light on second floor. INTERIOR: substantial remains of timber-frame visible throughout building, including length of outer wall to No.29 (qv) on first floor. Close string staircase with turned balusters, square newels with attached half balusters and flat moulded handrail rises substantially intact to second floor. First floor: in centre front room, fireplace with moulded jambs, rosettes and plain shelf; two 3-panel doors survive, one between front rooms, one to cupboard in passage. Second floor: in centre front room, cast-iron fireplace and grate, and in right end room complete range by Hill of York. Part of gable wall in rear room lined with section of shaped wainscot: a variety of panelled doors survive, one with part of a leather hinge, one of L-hinges. Painted plaster possibly c1700; alternatively contemporary with timber-framing and possibly C15. (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 136).
