Abstract/Summary

Watching brief for new electricity cable trench. At the northen end of the trench, to the east of where it crossed the Grange track, a layer of small stone and crushed brick indicate the presence of an earlier trackway. Between the Grange buildings and the Old Dairy the remains of the former garden wall were recorded. From the Old Dairy to Broad Lane the trench was on the eastern edge of the adjacent field and recorded no archaeological deposits. The ground was noted to drop steeply to Broad Lane, where the trench followed the field edge south-westwards to the electicity substaiton. At the eastern end of the trench deposits thought to represent ditch backfill were recorded. Fragmentsof medieval roof tile were found in the upcast from the trench in the vicintiy of this feature. The tile dated to the 13th-16th century. Medieval tile was also recovered from a demolition deposit recorded on the north side of the Grange.
