During September 1995, York Archaeological Trust (YAT) carried out an archaeological evaluation of the site of proposed housing at West Bank Park, Holgate, York (NGR SE 58305120; Fig.1) on behalf of the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust. The first stage of work was a geophysical survey undertaken by Geoquest Associates whose report is enclosed as an accompanyilig document. This was followed by a series of trial excavation trenches some of which were located over anomalies recorded during the geophysical survey and others to examine areas outside that covered by the survey. The site has little archaeological value. No archaeological deposits were encountered within the excavated areas. In the relatively undisturbed southern part of the site there were no archaeological features within the areas of excavation of earlier than modern date. In the northern part of the site, any archaeological deposits are likely to have been removed by the landscaping of the area.
