Title 48a Marygate
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2019

Abstract/Summary

Roman activity characterised by the presence of a possible kiln/oven, a ditch, pits and soil horizons. The medieval period activity is highlighted by pit digging, a probable property boundary ditch and soil horizons. The pits were dated to between the mid-11th to 12th and 14th to 16th centuries and the soil horizons to the 12th to 15th centuries. Later activity is represented by levelling deposits mainly sealing the medieval soil horizons and dated to between the 16th - 18th and 18th - 19th centuries. This activity is probably related to the embryonic development of Marygate properties that currently exist. A robber trench dated to the 17th century has been interpreted as potentially robbing out a Roman foundation/wall, highlighting the potential existence of above ground Roman structures during this period.
