Excavation of two trenches and monitoring of boreholes. The evaluation excavations suggest that that part of the site to the west of the 19th century buildings is capped by fairly modern dumped deposits approximately 1.20 -1.40m thick. Beneath these are surfaces which probably date to the 16th century and which may have been laid down during the extension of the site into the river. In Trench 1 was a series of pits filled with brick and tile possibly representing an earlier peiod of demolition when the current 17th century buildings were constructed. Trench 2 lower levels identifed deposits dumped along the river front, either etending the bank ito the river or to raise the height of the bank. These deposits were cut by 19th century structures. Boreholes indicated 4m of archaeological deposits may be present nearest Coney Streer, but closer to 7m towards the river.
