Abstract/Summary

Extensive, well stratified deposits were encountered during construction of a new cellar and ground beams. The earliest Roman deposits were recorded at 12.72m AOD consistent with areas of industrial activity. The upper limit of these deposits were recorded at 13.57m AOD. An extensive levelling episoe raised the level to 14.70m associated with the construciton of buildings. Medieval deposits conisisting of medieval robber cuts sealed by a cobble surface were recorded at 15.31m AOD and further deposits recorded a6 15.62-15.70m AOD across the site. The upper level of medieval deposits was recorded in the north-west area of the site at 16.20m AOD. At the south-east side of the site medieval deposits were immediately below the concrete floors (16.81m AOD) that covered most of the excavated area. At the north-est aof the site there appeared to be 1.20m of loamy soil between the medieval deposits and the modern floors (16.81m AOD).
