Abstract/Summary
Archaeological watching brief at 4 St. Martin’s Lane, York revealed red brick structural foundations associated with a garden shed. Surprisingly, underneath the rear yard, was an intact single nave barrel vaulted cellar. The 19th century cellar extends beyond the eastern boundary of 4 St. Martin’s Lane, and appears to be part of a complex of cellars which run underneath properties 1, 2, 3 and 4. The cellar network appears to be connected to the Grade II listed Public House (Walkers Bar), number 47 Micklegate (Historic England List Entry: 1257330).
