In June and July 1999 York Archaeological Trust observed the excavation of a number of trenches dug to underpin the walls of 3 Avenue Terrace, Clifton, York. In all the trenches excavated the stratigraphy was very similar and consisted of modern topsoil/construction deposits overlying presumed medieval ploughsoil. The natural sub-soil, generally clay but with some sand, was observed in all the recorded trenches. No features were noted cut into the natural deposits.
