Abstract/Summary

Following completion of an archaeological evaluation discussions were held with City of York Council Archaeologist with regards to the need for further archaeological investigations. These discussions concluded that a scheme of archaeological mitigation was required, within that part of the site where the proposed foundations would be of sufficient depth to impact upon archaeological features. The further work was to entail a small excavation area located close to the Navigation Road frontage, to expand evaluation Trench 2. The investigation confirmed the relatively high level of natural ground suggested by evaluation Trench 2. This had been overlain by a sequence of dump deposits of probable medieval date. Occasional pit digging during the medieval period suggests that this area was still relatively peripheral to the main core of activity further to the south. The later phase of features would relate to activity in this area of York following the backfilling of the King's Fishpool and the increased urbanisation of the area. Completion of the mitigation excavation and this report conclude all archaeological works required in respect of the archaeological condition attached to this development. The development can now proceed without the need for a watching brief to be maintained.
