Source/Archive record SYO1881 - 14 Lendal

Title 14 Lendal
Date/Year 2016

On the 15th and 16th of November 2016 two trial pits were excavated within the basement rooms of the Robson and Cooper Building, 14 Lendal, by York Archaeological Trust. The objective of the trial pits was to record and characterise any archaeological deposits, features or buried structures likely to be disturbed by the proposed ground works in the basement rooms involving the removal and subsequent replacement of the floors. Both of the trial pits excavated revealed a sequence of post medieval deposits and structures relating to the use of basement of 14 Lendal. None of the archaeological contexts encountered predate the building. It is, therefore, unlikely that the proposed ground works within the basement of 14 Lendal will disturb any significant archaeological deposits. The limestone wall footing, seen in basement room 0.3, and the brick piers, seen beneath the flags in basement room 0.1, should be observed further during the watching brief in order clarify their function, record their full extent and confirm their date.
