Abstract/Summary
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd, during a geotechnical borehole programme at 1 Percy’s Lane York. This involved the monitoring of two large bore cable percussion samples and five smaller bore window samples. The assessment of the exposed deposits suggested higher natural ground to the south and east of site, falling away to the north and the area of the King’s fishpool. This variation in ground level and associated water logging may have influced the siting of St Margaret’s Church to the south. The boreholes also revealed an east west variation on the site with those boreholes located to the west encountering deposits containing substantial quantities of early modern industrial material, whilst those to the east encountered much cleaner deposits.
