Title The Rose and Crown PH
Date/Year 2012

A desk top assessment was undertaken on the rear car park area of the Rose & Crown public house, just outside Walmgate Bar gate on the east side of York. This demonstrates the complex history of the area since the establishment of a Roman road in the 1st century, which includes late Anglo-Scandinavian development, medieval expansion and contraction, postmedieval revival, destruction in the English Civil War, followed by slow recovery. Three burials have been located on the site but the proposed new build straddles its historic boundary with the fields beyond where the archaeological resource appears to be relatively low. Much of the proposed site within the historic pub boundary has been disturbed by buildings that have since been demolished, but it is recommended that appropriate trial trenches be undertaken to establish the depths of significant archaeological levels.
