Abstract/Summary
Between 8th and 10th December 2009, York Archaeological Trust undertook an
archaeological evaluation within a field (designated Area B6), located at the eastern-most
end of Kimberlow Hill, Heslington, York, North Yorkshire. The results of the excavations gave
little insight into the development of a sequence of well defined and complex
palaeochannels. One of these contained well preserved root material which provided a C14
date of 2910 – 2880 BC (Middle Neolithic). The fills of the channels are the result of natural
and human interaction, attested to by a pair of posts which had been inserted into the top of
the later channel sequence in the middle Iron Age (400 – 200 BC). These may have formed
a part of an east-west alignment in the landscape. The results also showed a high probability
of the survival of a sealed, well preserved Holocene landscape.
