Terrace of 9 houses with attached area railings; now municipal offices. 1834 with later alterations and extensions. Terrace design by John Harper; interiors by various architects including No.1 by P Robinson jnr. and GT Andrews. Stucco front and returns, rusticated on ground floor: rear of orange-brown brick; mansard roof of slate with stuccoed stacks. Cast-iron railings, balcony and staircase balustrades. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basements and attics; 27-bay curving front. Each house has 3 bays: Nos 1, 5 and 9 break forward articulated by giant pilasters rising from first floor, coupled and clasping the corners of Nos 1 and 9. Entrances to Nos 1 and 9 originally in left and right returns respectively. Area with 6-panel doors and 12-pane windows to basements spanned by flat bridges to front doors. Nos 5 and 9 have projecting porches of coupled pilasters with entablature: No.1 had similar porch, now removed: remaining houses have pilastered doorcases. Doors are of 4 flush panels with bordered overlights except where altered. Ground floor windows are single 12-pane sashes, except to No.5 which are tripartite, all with sunk panel aprons. First floor windows are tall 12- or 15-pane sashes, those to Nos 1, 5 and 9 in raised architraves, centre ones with pediment hoods on consoles. Second floor windows are squat 12-pane sashes with sills extended as sill band. Projecting moulded cornice overall: 3-bay attic parapet with unequal 9-pane windows to No.5: other attic windows are flat dormers with 2-light Yorkshire sashes or casements. First floor windows have continuous balcony with balustrading braced to wall. Left and right returns: detailed as main front. Left return has central doorway altered to 12-pane sash window and blocked glazed and panelled door at left. INTERIORS: not fully inspected. Several houses have fine staircases with ornate balustrades. Decorative plasterwork includes Greek frieze in No.6. Many original fireplaces survive. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings raised on low stone coping, circular in section, have mushroom finials, mace standards and bracing to ground floor wall. The railings were first listed 24/06/83. Circa 1834. Architect: John Harper. A good terrace range forming
a single crescent-shaped unit. Stucco; 3 storeys plus basement and
attic; 27 sash windows; 9 plain pilaster doorcases with cornice
hoods; 3-window pieces with central pedimented window, which break
forward both at the ends and in the centre and are flanked by
giant pilasters above the rusticated ground storey and basement;
at 1st floor level an ironwork balcony runs the full length of the
terrace. Good iron railings to areas and with returns to doorways.
The interiors are much altered but retain some cast iron staircase
balustrades, decorative plasterwork and some fireplaces. (RCHM
