Full Description
House, now shop. Late C18 with later alteration; C20  shopfront. Front of painted brick in Flemish bond with pantile  roof and brick stacks.  
EXTERIOR: 4-storey 2-window front. Shopfront framed in plain  pilasters with grooved console blocks at the head and  vestigial frieze: small-pane glazed door recessed between  plate glass windows with small-pane clerestories. Windows on  first and second floor are 12-pane sashes with flat arches of  painted gauged brick: on third floor squat 6-pane sashes: all  have narrow painted sills.  
INTERIOR: re-used open string staircase with slender turned  balusters, heavy newel, and moulded ramped-up handrail. Ground  floor front room has moulded cornice.  (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 223).

(463) House, No. 36, of four storeys, was built in the early 19th century. The front elevation, of white brick in Flemish bond, is two bays wide and has a modern shop front. Inside, the central transverse staircase has reused 18th-century balusters.
