Full Description

House and shop. c1840 with later alterations and altered late C19 shopfront. Orange-grey brick in Flemish bond with timber shopfront and eaves cornice; pantile roof.

EXTERIOR: 3-storey 1-window front. Shopfront framed in fluted pilasters with broad canted frieze and cornice terminating in bulbous brackets. Glazed and panelled door recessed between plate glass windows over moulded panel risers. Windows on first and second floors are 16-pane sashes with painted sills and channelled wedge lintels. Moulded eaves cornice.

INTERIOR: staircase with slender turned balusters and serpentine moulded handrail survives.

(482) House and shop, No. 29, of brick with tiled roof, is a three-storey, single-fronted building of the second quarter of the 19th century. It has a conventional plan with staircase running parallel to the street, set between the front and back rooms; the original fittings include a reeded plaster cornice with floral stops and the staircase. An early water closet discovered on the second floor in 1972 is now in the Castle Museum.
