Small country house. Early C18 with additions and alterations of 1815, including wing to right, of c1920 including porch and veranda and chapel of 1859. For the Palme family. Pinkish-brown brick, rendered, with magnesian limestone dressings and concealed Welsh slate roof, chapel of yellow brick with cast tile roof. 3 storeys, 3 bays with later wing to right of 2 storeys and 2 first floor windows. C18 block. Plinth. Originally central entrance now concealed by early C20 canted bay. Entrance now off-centre, a part-glazed door to veranda which covers 3rd bay. Ground floor has 2-pane sashes and casements. 1st floor band. 12-pane sashes, that above original entrance in eared architrave with vertical tooling and keystone under an ashlar plaque for coat of arms which interrupts 2nd floor band. 2nd floor has unequally-hung 9-pane sashes, that to centre with ashlar sill. Early C20 fire escape descends from central window. Moulded ashlar coping. Hipped roof. Clusters of tall ridge stacks.. Wing to right has early C20 bay to ground floor with 2-pane sashes. First floor band. 12-pane sashes. Second floor band. Low parapet. Chapel to rear of 3-bays with pointed entrance and two pointed window openings. Interior: early-C18 dining room has panelling with egg and dart moulding; pedimented doorcase with pulvinated oak-leaf frieze; eared chimney piece with moulded and pedimented overmantel; oak leaf and dentil cornice; panelled ceiling with Greek key moulding. Staircase hall has openwell staircase with column on bulbous vase balusters, two per tread. Original staircase window architrave (now an opening leading to C19 wing) has Corinthian pilasters and moulded frieze. Panelled ceiling has egg and dart moulding with a dentil and acanthus moulded cornice. Further service staircase to second floor is closed string with turned balusters. Some probably re-used C17 panelling to some rooms. Some C18 8-panel doors in recessed fielded-panel surrounds to ground floor and 6-panel doors in similar surrounds to first floor. Bathroom has C18 panelling and fire surround. Shutters to some windows. C19 wing has some fireplaces with classical ornament, that to first floor sitting room has frieze of nymphs holding swags, baskets of fruit and women weeping over urns. Back kitchen has cast-iron range by Walter of York.

Naburn Hall came into the Palmes family in 1220. W Palmes being the
first owner. (2)

Naburn Hall is a much altered and modernised building with a
pebble dash covering. An architectural dating is problematical but
the structure does appear to have been of a Georgian or later
period and is of no architectural merit. (3)

Largely C18, at least in appearance. Modernised in 1818. L-shaped.
Two storeys, roughcast. Three storey square main block. Bands.
Rows of sashes. Parapet. Entrance front. Three storeys, central
window with eared architraves, keystones. Greenhouse on ground
floor. Two storey extension to right. River front L-shaped
3-4 windows. Two storyes. Garden grant 3-2-2 windows, right hand
projects.
Interior. C18 decoration to dining room good stairs. Other
features elsewhere.
History. The home of the Palmes family since the thirteenth
century.
Setting. Riverside garden.

5/87 II Coachouse at Naburn Hall
C18. Two storeys, roughcast, three sashes. Band. Ground floor
with two segmental headed coach arches. Eaves. hipped slates. Clock
turret in centre of front with ramped-up sides. Square open
bellcote. Square dome. One storey projecting wing. One window
in round headed recess. Hipped slates. (4-5)
