Full Description

Tramway associated with gravel extraction to the north-east of St Oswalds Church. Shown on 1852 Ordnance Survey, but not on Ordnance Survey maps after c.1900.

[the tracks on the 1852 Ordnance Survey are marked as atramway] suggests that it was a plateway or guided way with ‘trams’ – wagons with plain wheels that could be easily manoeuvred without the need for points. We have a Peak Forest Tramway wagon on display in the Great Hall, and this also shows how the ‘plateway’ is different to the ‘railway’ that we know today
