Monument record MYO4783 - Roman occupation at St Mary Bishophill Senior

Summary

Excavations at the Church of St Mary Bishophill Senior revealed Roman features. A 2nd century hearth and ironworking site was followed by a substantial town house of 2nd-4th century date. This had an apsidal bay in the South wall. This building eventually became partly incorporated in the Saxon church built in the 10th century.
