Summary

Apparently a narrow pointed archway with a single gate flanked on either side by a small round turret, extant from 1315. Also known as the Crane Tower from its proximity to the city crane. First documented in 1403, it survived fairly intact until 1750, but was finally destroyed in 1878 except for the underground footings.

NMR: [SE60305130] Skeldergate Postern [AT] (Site of). (1)

Skeldergate Postern, first documented in 1315 and demolished in 1808. It consisted of a single narrow arch flanked on either side by a round turret. (2)

From NMR record

Crane Tower, also known as the Skeldergate Postern Tower. First documented in 1403, it survived fairly intact until 1750, but was finally destroyed in 1878 except for the underground footings. It was circular, 23 feet in diameter, with a battered base A conical roof gave it a similar appearance to the North Street Postern Tower. From the tower a chain could be stretched across the river to the Davy Tower.
