Monument record MYO4767 - YORK CITY WALLS North St Postern

Summary

The site of a Medieval postern gate. The original postern gate was enlarged in 1577, but was a single opening four feet wide and nine feet high. Externally the opening was square-headed and internally a flat lintel was supported on two corbel courses. It was replaced in 1840 with a four-centred arch for the Great North of England Railway Company so it could have access to its coal yard. The embrasures above the earlier gate had been covered to form gun loops, but the parapet of 1840 is plain.
